Dental Hygiene

An hour appointment with a Dental Hygienist?

Most people that I see for the first time ask me the same questions regarding the length of their first appointment:

  • ‘Are you serious!!’
  • ‘What are you going to do to me?’
  • ‘Why does it take so long?’
  • ‘You are only going to clean my teeth’
  • ‘My teeth are not that dirty!’
  • ‘It took 5 mins down the road!’

We are different at Botanics Dental Care, I like my patients to understand and give them the time to do what it takes to get their gums as healthy as they can be.

Half of the 60 mins appointment is talking & explaining.

Gum charting, checking all teeth for gum recession, (long in the tooth) charting bleeding and plaque around the teeth. Discussing why they have gum disease, what it is and what steps we are going to take to improve their gum health.

Shown areas in a mirror where people are missing, taking time to explain what they need to do to improve on, discussing future appointments.

Oral Hygiene instructions, tooth brushing instructions if needed, flossing instructions, demonstrating in your mouth.

The final 30 mins is giving them a good scale and polish.

Your gums are important, they are a good investment, yours for life, they need to stay healthy to keep your teeth, you might not see the difference the way you would if you have any kind of cosmetic dental treatment, but if you don’t invest in your gums then you could lose your teeth in the long term.

When patients leave, the comments I then get are different to the ones I got at the beginning:

  • ‘That was great!’
  • ‘Well worth it!’
  • ‘Very thorough!’
  • ‘I understand what I have to do!’

Hygienist appointments with Air Flow

Just because your teeth look great doesn’t mean that they are healthy, for your teeth to be healthy you must keep your gums healthy too. Only a professional is able to detect whether or not your teeth and gums are healthy everywhere – even those hard to see places.

a-bOur hygienists use very precise high-tech instruments that are permanently cooled during treatment. Professional tooth cleaning is thorough and leaves nothing behind –except a great feeling.

Beautiful white teeth convey a feeling of confidence and energy. A great smile is the envy of many. Tooth deposits and discoloured teeth not only look bad, they can harm the health of your teeth and gums. To keep teeth healthy you need to see your Hygienist regularly to remove plaque and tartar. If bacteria are permitted to proliferate for extended periods of time, plaque is formed and encourages the growth of more bacteria. Tissue and bone which hold the tooth are affected.

air-flowThe Air Flow method is perfectly painless and it is great for your teeth. You will see and feel the difference.

A mixture of air and modified sodium bicarbonate combines with a water jet to remove plaque and tooth deposits fast and painlessly.

The powder used in the airflow comes in 4 different flavours mint, cherry, tropical and raspberry. Each patient has their own favourite!

air-flow1For most patients we recommended that they see the hygienist every three months. We have a Dental Plan in place that would spread the cost of these visits.
